Recorded formats

For some reason the shows on Indies site are now in just Windows media format. Why change away from mp3's , Ah well another strange choice.

Be Indie. Use Ogg to really be Indie. Forget restricted formats like asf/asx

and another thing ; why do they have the producers microphones on all the shows turned down so low now.
That was always part of the shows. Smart people talking about things.

In Los Angeles this afternoon. Played live on Jonsey's Jukebox on Indie 103.1. Doing the show was fun cause Jonsey has a great sense of humor and doesn't mind going off the rails at all. Whoever owned the building that all the radio stations we're in had a sense of humor too, just look at this sofa. They told us to have a seat but I couldn't bring myself to do it..LoL. The show at the Knitting factory was dyn-o-mite thanks to a rambunctious crew and our beautiful friend Gina who rocked the pipes during the encore!"

Alexi Lalas ( LA Galaxy )

Hey guys. Those you who live in L.A. know that the raddest show on the air is "Jonesy's Jukebox," hosted by one-and-only Sex Pistol Steve Jones. Best. Radio Show. Ever.

Anyhoo, recently on Mondays he's started doing a segment called "Jonesy's Jukebox Jury," on which he blindly plays new songs for a panel of music "experts" who then critique the tunes. Instead of a "thumbs up/down" scenario, panelists give the songs ratings of either "mustard" (good) or "pants" (bad).

Past Jury guests have included Duran Duran's John Taylor and Morrissey's guitar player...and now ME! Yes, I will be offering my typical mouthy musical opinions on the show this Monday, March 26, 11am-1pm PST!
and a nobody. a female nobody . Rebecca Lisi (sp?)

...and dont "Read more" unless there is something telling you to do that.
I need to go fix the stupid blogger recommended "Read More" system.

This day in music

http://www.thisdayinmusic.com/index.php

1977, after being with the label for just six days The Sex Pistols were fired from A&M due to pressure from other label artists and its Los Angeles head office. 25,000 copies of ‘God Save The Queen’ were pressed and the band made £75,000 ($127,500) from the deal.

Nothing to do with the Jukebox

Years ago when Indie started it was an amazing thing that struck some people deeply and made them find a way to come together and enjoy the music that they liked, or even more loved, over the air in Los Angeles.

That changed . A year ago the station started to change and then shows were shifted about and playlists changed but still a loose knit group of people stayed in touch. I never met any of them, just not my thing to do, let alone had any contact that gained me anything from Indie , some replied too emails but nothing more. On Sunday one of Indies original supporters and staunchest intial listeners passed away. I know nobody at the station knows or cares, as it is a commercial enterprise , but i would just like to make note in passing. Some people who knew cared.
If i felt right enough to pass on the private emails and messages that were generated by this personality i would do so but do not feel comfortable doing that . Trying to control the force of nature that she was... it was definitely an interesting thing to be involved in.

Myspace

Peace and thinking of the kid.
I know himself was a big Damned fan as his mom asked Dicky to play them for his birthday, and Dicky got Rat Scabies to do the dedication, but these lyrics strike a more important chord for me at this time....

The Clash; "Stay Free"

" 'cos years have passed and things have changed
and i move anyway i wanna go
i'll never forget the feeling i got
when i heard that you'd got home
an' i'll never forget the smile on my face
'cos i knew where you would be
an' if you're in the crown tonight
have a drink on me
but go easy...step lightly...stay free"

( reminded of this by Will Swaims leaving from OC weekly. The Clash are never wrong )

Jury of the 5h

  • Mark McGrath ; of T.V's Extra !!
  • Liam Gowing ; no idea , a journalist turns up on a search so lets go with that. (OK. LA City editor for Onion AV Club and other things )
  • Tracey Ullman ; One of a kind
  • Dave French ; No idea either; i thought it said Dawn French; Vicar of Dibley; but apparently not. Ah !! Steve says; Sculptor and "You're the nobody this week"

This is/ was shaping up to be a great one. ( Dawn French and Tracey Ullman would have been great but now .... )
Steve has already said he is driving to Austin, so he must be leaving soon after this show :-)

( Update Monday: Apparently this show was recorded Saturday, so Steve must be on his way , that means Tuesdays show will be a repeat )
Tracey added to this by saying "Dont spoil my Saturday". She had just been told about Freddie of Freddie and the Dreamers death )

NB Why not have Tracey fill in sometime when they are going to play a repeat. Like tomorrow

... and Sir William Connolly is in town as well at least till the 24th .

( p.s. can i just say how much i hate the new blogger. what a pain in the arse )

Best of: Chrissie Hynde

For some reason todays is a repeat, although a good one even just for Steve embarrassing Chrissie over some "physical" activities. Rosanna Arquettes reaction is great as well.

Although they did add in;
"Hello i am Patrick from Fall Out Boy and you are listening to Jonesy Jukebox"

Moral Dilemma : Fall Out Boy

During Shovels 10-12 show today Fall Out Boy were in the building. They wanted to play and hang out but this triggered some sort of panic amongst listeners. Phone calls etc. They were excited to get indie and Jonesy shirts. After some of the stuff that is played on the station now, it is just good that some bands are excited to still want to get on and play. Think of the publicity of a Jonesy Jukebox shirt on stage or video. How about them jamming with Steve.
If Sting or similar went on people probably wouldnt mind but is that not the same.
What is better a popular band that wants to be on or people who are supposed to be supported (ie Morrissey, Weller etc) who dont want to come on.

They eventually ended up recording some promo spots and acoustic songs with TK. Opportunity missed , i think.

Time magazine and Steve

Look what Time magazine just called Jonesy !!

"One album was all they made, and probably all anyone could stand. Johnny Rotten, who had never sung before, had a gift for malice that he turned on the complacent England of the 70s. "God Save the Queen" dared voice the opinion that the monarch "ain't no human bein'." "Holidays in the Sun" mashed the Holocaust, the British economy and third world tourism into something offensive to hear ("I don't wanna holiday in the sun/ I wanna go to new Belsen/ I wanna see some/ History 'cause now I got a reasonable economy") and more offensive to ignore. Sid Vicious was a tragic sideshow, but credit guitarist Steve Jones, now one of America's best radio DJs, with making the songs explosive and catchy."

Wednesday, November 15, 2006

Thomas Dolby

guest today

thomasdolby.com

"I’m writing from a hotel in Buena Park, CA (behind the ‘Orange Curtain’) getting ready for a radio spot tomorrow on Steve Jones’ show, yes! the former Sex Pistols guitarist. I played a charity football match against him once, and he was pretty good. Fortunately I won’t need to gush about how much I adored ‘Anarchy in the UK’ and ‘God Save The Queen’ as a teenager, as I met Rotten a few years ago and I did enough gushing for both of them."

Re The Clash

From the Guardian;

Steve Jones
Sex Pistols and Indie 103.1 FM, LA

London Calling

I loved the Clash. They were formed because of seeing the Pistols, so they were never seen as a threat. The Pistols were number one and the Clash were number two, even if that was perceived to have changed further along the road. I like the way they played because it was the same style as I'm from, the same school of glam. Mick Jones was coming from the same place I was. I went up to Birmingham and played with them. It was all good in my book.

'London Calling' was their 'Anarchy in the UK'. I thought it was a depressing song but significant, because of the lyrics. You know, history gets twisted by those who weren't there. The Clash, they were there, we were there. I've had Mick on the blower for the radio show. And Joe would leave me these weird messages when he was alive, at 5am, saying how I was his fave guitar player. They were great guys. I liked them.

" #273. 10-03-06 LA CA: ...........Tomorrow, good ol’ Billy Bragg will come to the studio and track some music for season three of my show. Looking forward to seeing him play, it’s been awhile. He’s a good guy.

Dispatches Update
#274. 10-04-06 LA CA: 2311 hrs. Billy Bragg was so damn good. I have not seen him in some time. I’ve always liked his work. I have seen him play over the years and it’s always great. Today he played two songs for the show. He did two takes each and they were flawless so I am sure we have great footage for the show. That made my week watching him play.

so 2 songs for IFC were more fun than some time on the 'box. Ah well.
